The Paramount Role of Coach and Retention

Too many players abandon sport early. In junior sport especially, dropout is often spoken about as if it is simply about talent, ability, or interest. But many players do not leave because they are not good enough. They leave because the experience no longer feels enjoyable, meaningful, or connected.

Feeling unnoticed can be a major reason players drift away. A player may turn up every week, try hard, and play their role, but still feel invisible if the obvious players only are recognised. Over time, that can affect confidence and motivation.

Retention matters for players, clubs, teams and communities. When players stay involved, they continue to build skills, friendships, confidence, resilience and healthy habits. Sport offers benefits far beyond the scoreboard. It gives people routine, self discipline, belonging, purpose and connection.  For clubs, retention is crucial because strong participation creates stronger teams and stronger communities. Keeping more players involved helps build depth, culture and long-term development. It also supports coaches, volunteers and families by creating a more enthusiastic and positive sporting environment.

The paramount role of the coach within a club is acknowledged in all forms of sports – he/she has a huge influence on whether players stay. The way feedback is given, the way effort is recognised, and the way roles are explained can shape how a player feels about themselves and their place in the team.

Better visibility on players can help clubs support individuals before they walk away. If coaches can see who is committed, who is improving, and who may be disengaging, they can respond earlier.

Player retention is not just about keeping numbers up. It is about making sport a place where more players feel at home, feel seen, valued and encouraged to keep going.
