Supporting parents to better understand player growth.

Parents naturally want to know how their child is going. They watch from the sideline, celebrate the good moments, and hope their child is enjoying the game. But in many sports, what parents notice most easily are goals, possessions, marks, tackles or scoreboard moments.

Growth is often less obvious than results. A player can improve without starring every week. They may be learning to hold their position, chase harder, make better decisions, support teammates, or play a role that does not always stand out to those on the boundary.  When parents only see traditional stats or big moments, it can create a narrow view of performance. This can sometimes lead to pressure, comparison, or frustration. A child may be developing well, even if they are not getting the most possessions or kicking goals.

A better understanding of development can change the conversation. When parents can appreciate effort, role, progress and improvement, they are more likely to encourage development rather than focus only on outcomes.

Such understanding can also build trust between coaches and families. Coaches are trying to support the whole team, not just rewarding the most visible players. When parents understand what coaches are looking for, sideline conversations can become more constructive.

The goal is not to create more comparisons; it is to create better understanding. Helpful information should give parents a clearer picture of their child’s growth while keeping the focus on confidence, enjoyment and long-term participation.  Parents are important supporters in every sport. When they can better understand development, they can help their child feel proud of their own progress and appreciated that a team depends on every individual and a varied range of skills.
