Why Grassroots Aussie Rules Stats Should Be About Development, Not Pressure

Statistics in Sport are important, but they need to be used effectively to build a players confidence. In junior sport, the aim should be to create the whole player and their confidence.  Creating pressure, comparison with others or inciting fear of making mistakes must be avoided. Young players are still learning. They are building confidence, understanding the game, developing skills and working out where they fit in a team.  Statistics are obviously also valuable when dealing with higher level junior players all the way through to senior level.  If statistics are only used to rank players or highlight who did the most, they can easily become another source of pressure. Players may start comparing themselves to others, parents may focus on numbers instead of development, and coaches may feel pushed towards measuring performance instead of supporting growth.

But statistics can also do something very different.  When used properly, they can help coaches identify learning opportunities. They can show where a player is improving, where they might need extra support, or where their effort is helping the team in ways that are not always obvious. A tackle, a chase, a block, a spoil or a smart position can all matter, even if they do not appear on the scoreboard.  This is the type of information that can lead to better conversations between players, parents and coaches.   Good data should open conversations, not close them. It should help a coach say, “Here’s what you’re doing well,” or “Here’s one area we can work on together.” It should encourage progress, effort and confidence. When stats are used to support development, not pressure, they can become a positive part of all sport.
